The Call of the Wild: Rwanda’s Hidden Gorilla Kingdom

For the discerning traveler who has explored the finest corners of the world, this is experience that continues to captivate the soul. For the people who has experienced the best safaris, this is not just another wildlife encounter. The Volcanoes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to one of the world’s last remaining populations of mountain gorillas, offering an unparalleled opportunity to witness these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

What makes this experience truly special is the level of exclusivity it offers. With only a limited number of permits available each day, the encounter with the gorillas is both rare and personal. It’s a privileged opportunity, guided by expert trackers and rangers who have spent their lives learning the intricate behavior and movements of these gentle giants. This is not mass tourism—it is an immersive, private experience, designed for the refined traveler.

What to expect:

Ensure you book your trekking permit in advance, as permits are limited and in high demand. The cost for a permit is approximately $1,500 USD per person. Packing the right gear is essential for comfort, safety, and enjoyment during your trek.  You will be assigned an experienced guide for the trek, but porters are available for hire to help carry your bag or assist with the trek if needed. You will be trekking in small groups (usually no more than 8 people) to ensure minimal disturbance to the gorillas and their habitat. The trek can vary in length depending on the location of the gorillas, but it usually takes between 1 and 6 hours. You can select from an easy, moderate, or challenging trek, tailored to your fitness level and mobility. You’ll be walking through dense forest, muddy trails, and sometimes steep inclines. Once you reach the gorillas, you will typically have one hour to observe them in their natural habitat. This is a truly unique and memorable experience, as the gorillas may move around, feed, or interact with one another.

Perfect Timing & Stay Duration:

The best time for gorilla trekking in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is during the dry seasons, from June to September and December to February.

One day of trekking is typical, but a three to four-day stay allows for multiple treks and a deeper connection with the park, including visits to the Dian Fossey Research Center or the Virunga Volcanoes.

Itinerary planning:

Rwanda’s gorilla trekking experience can be seamlessly combined with several other stunning destinations, depending on the traveler’s interests. Here are a few popular options often paired with a gorilla trekking day:

  • Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater (Tanzania)– For those seeking a safari experience, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are often combined with Rwanda’s gorilla trekking. Both are easily accessible from Rwanda via a short flight.
  • Masai Mara (Kenya) -Kenya’s Masai Mara is a popular extension for travelers seeking to explore Africa’s wildlife diversity. It offers world-renowned game viewing, and the chance to witness the Great Migration (seasonal) or the Big Five in its vast plains.
  • Lake Kivu (Rwanda) – For a more tranquil escape after the intense adventure of gorilla trekking, many choose to unwind by combining their visit with a stay at Lake Kivu. This beautiful lake offers luxury resorts, water activities, and stunning scenery, perfect for relaxation.
